The Conversations Some are avoiding (But Should Be Talking out)

Since stepping out of underwriting and returning to origination, I’ve been reconnecting with dozens of colleagues—people I’ve known for years and others I’ve just met as I was going to UWM, preparing for the Safe Act and realizing all of the things I didn’t know about as far as how to be helpful to customers.

These conversations have been real, raw, and revealing.

Here’s what keeps coming up:

  • “I’ve been in retail forever. Is it too late to switch to broker?”

  • “I love the business, but I hate my CRM/system.”

  • “I’m making money, but I’m working too hard for it.”

  • “I still haven’t started posting consistently in social media and now I have to learn new AI skills as well?”

  • “I want more support—or more freedom. Or both.”

  • “Is going to being a broker really that much better for my customers?”

Some professionals are content where they are. Others are thriving. But many, quietly, are searching for something better… even if they’re not sure what “better” looks like yet. In 2023 I can promise you I had no idea what the answers were or what “better” even meant to me anymore.

There’s No One Right Path—Just the Right One for YOU

What I’ve learned is that success in this industry looks different for everyone. Some love the fast-paced team vibe of retail. Others want the flexibility and control of the broker world. Some need better tools. Others need better people. Some of my friends in real estate were exhausted after 2020 and 2021. They worked massive hours, never had a break, and now, while they do want to stay in the beginning stages of originating loans, they would prefer to be silent and in the background for a while. A sabbatical, a time to refresh? A career change while being able to refer business, still make commissions, and trust your customers will be taken care of, and you can check in on them whenever you want.

The key is knowing:
✅ What you love
✅ What drains your energy
✅ What kind of support actually helps you grow
✅ And whether your current setup is aligned with where you want to be

I’ve been exploring these questions myself. And that’s why I’m sharing these stories—because someone out there is probably feeling the same way you are. And they need to hear that there are options.
